NAPAC drum making event

(SHOWN ABOVE) Ayan Musse, SPPS Office of Education Equity coordinator; Kate Martens, Saint Peter School Board member, SPMS Principal Jon Graff; and Jason Toupence, SPMS STEM teacher, take part in the Native American Parent Advisory Council’s drum making event earlier this month at the SPMS media center.

Saint Peter Public School’s Native American Parent Advisory Committee (NAPACS) hosted a  drum making workshop on March 1 in the Saint Peter Middle School’s media center.

The drum making was instructed by Travis Decory from St. Paul. Decory, originally from Rosebud, South Dakota, brought his personal knowledge and representation of the hand drum to the event and shared it with those participants.

“The class experienced the step by step process of stretching, tying and creating a drumstick to go along with the drum,” Char Klah, NAPAC chairperson, said. “Mr. Decory brought his storytelling from his perspective as well as neighboring tribes of this land, at the end of the evening each child took home the drum that they made.”

This event was brought to you by NAPAC in an effort to share cultural knowledge of our Native American family, with the main focus on our youth. The next NAPAC event will take place in April.

Below are some highlights from the workshop!
