Saint Peter High School was one of three high schools in Nicollet County to take part in a seatbelt safety awareness event on Monday afternoon. This event, put on by area law enforcement, was the local kick off to the National Click It or Ticket Campaign that runs from May 11 to May 31, and the SPHS event was held simultaneously with ones held at Nicollet and Minnesota Valley Lutheran high schools.
The Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office worked with the Minnesota State Patrol, Saint Peter Police Department, South Central Minnesota EMS System, and South Central Minnesota Regional Towards Zero Deaths (TZD) Traffic Safety Coalition on this event which was held at each school location during afternoon dismissal.
Law enforcement officers were present at the exits of the parking lots of each school. The officers handed out coupons/rewards provided by TZD safe roads to students wearing their seatbelts as they were leaving the parking lots of the schools to promote the importance and safety of wearing seatbelts. Those businesses donating coupons/rewards included Kwik Trip, Dairy Queen, McDonald’s, Family Fresh, and Dunkin’.
“This was not an enforcement-focused event so students found not wearing their seatbelts were simply reminded of the safety risks and to wear it and will be given an Office of Traffic Safety Seatbelt hand out,” Nicollet County Sheriff’s Deputy Roman Hagen said. “Following this event, the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety, South Central EMS, and the Regional TZD Committee are also posting on social media feeds, promoting the event and importance of seatbelt safety at all times.”
