SPHS theater students have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming Spring Play. Radium Girls: A Play in Two Acts will hit the SPHS stage on Thursday, April 30th, and have performances on Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2 at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by clicking HERE.
(ABOVE AND BELOW are some recent rehearsal shots of the SPHS spring play cast and crew in action at the Performing Arts Center in preparation for the upcoming shows!
Directed by Robbie Deering, Jen Maldonado, and Scott Robinson, the cast and crew will be taking on D.W. Gregory’s drama which is based on the true story of the female factory workers who painted luminous watch dials in the 1920s and were poisoned by the radium they used, focusing on dial painter Grace Fryer's fight for justice against her employer, the U.S. Radium Corporation, and the company's idealistic owner, Arthur Roeder, who denies the connection between radium and the workers' illnesses.
According to Director Robbie Deering, rehearsals have been going well, and the play is unique in the fact that many of the characters were real people with real, dramatic, and impactful stories.
“Many of the actors will need to play multiple roles in this show, since there are over 30 named characters throughout it,” Deering said. “The main events of the play took place about 100 years ago, yet they have some very real impacts on the world today. Our cast has so many great ideas and has been making many connections with this story and what it could mean for audiences today.”
The set crew has been making great progress towards performance weekend as well. Tech Director Scott Robinson comments that the scale of the set has really pushed our crew’s limits, and students have a lot to be proud of.
“Our set crew has built a two-story factory that is 20' tall and 40' wide to bring this show to life," Robinson said. "It has been a lot of fun, and we have added to our bag of tricks with a hand-built functioning clock and 450-feet of LED's for the accent lighting that gives the Radium Girls set its glow.”
