Author visits North fourth grade classroom

North Elementary students in Ms. Mathiowetz’s fourth grade class recently had a special visit to their classroom by local author Julie Gilbert, writer of numerous children’s and young adult books, mainly focusing on historical and speculative fiction. Gilbert is also the author of several books from Capstone, including the Dark Waters series and many titles in the Girls Survive series.

During her visit with the students, Gilbert spent time taking and answering questions from the students about writing in general and also about the books she has written or is in the process of completing. She finished the visit with a group writing exercise for the students.

“When I talk to students that are this age, I like to speak on two important points of writing,” Gilbert said. "The first is the importance of reading both in school and out of school. I also like to chat with them about how creativity is something you're born with necessarily, but rather you develop over time.”
