Saint Peter High School’s building trades students have been hard at work building the 33rd house for Habitat for Humanity of South Central Minnesota. SPHS has been involved in this project for over thirty years, and students are under the guidance of SPHS instructor Scott Robinson during this project.
Students are currently working on the framing of walls and flooring and are hoping to have the full frame, including the roof, by winter break. Through this project, students gain hands-on experience with forming and pouring a foundation, framing the house, installing windows and doors, and perfecting exterior finishes, in addition to completing OSHA-10 training and investigating different jobs within the construction industry.
“Almost every day is a new experience for the students,” Robinson said. “Most have never worked with many of the materials and tools we get to use on the construction site. Learning new skills is the focus, but it is great for students to have a permanent landmark they can drive by and remember what they accomplished in high school.”
Photos shown above and below are from foundation work that took place in late October.
