SPMS bike classes

Saint Peter Middle School physical education teacher Abby Moore is taking advantage of the recent transition to nicer weather to teach her students about the importance of bike safety, which includes traffic rules and regulations, potential hazards to traveling, and the skills needed to ride a bike effectively.

Among the activities students got to participate in was a group bike ride, courtesy of the Minnesota Walk! Bike! Fun! Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety program. The program, which includes a curriculum designed specifically for Minnesota’s school and youth education programs, provides bikes for the students and teachers to ride.

“This is a great program for our students and to teach this curriculum, teachers are required to attend training,” Moore said. “I completed mine back in 2018 when I worked at Cleveland Public Schools and used this curriculum with second through sixth grade classes.”

The program is structured to meet Minnesota physical education standards and is an important part of the Minnesota Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School Program. Walk! Bike! Fun! (for ages elementary to middle school) is funded and programmed by the Minnesota Department of Health and BikeMN (Bicycle Alliance for MN).
